Each box is one note: the letter name on top, the computer key below. Wider boxes are held longer.
About the piece
The tune comes from the French song “Ah ! vous dirai-je, maman”, which was popular in the 18th century; the English words are from Jane Taylor’s poem “The Star”, published in 1806. It uses only six neighbouring notes, so it is the classic first piece on any piano.
Composer: Traditional (French melody, 18th century). Level: Beginner.
Practice tips
- Learn one line at a time. Repeat it until it feels easy, then add the next.
- Keep your hand still over the keys and let your fingers do the moving.
- Once you know the notes, press Listen again and play along with the rhythm.
- Hold Space for the sustain pedal to make the melody sing — release it between phrases so the notes don't blur.
